So...Umm...What Is That?

This morning, I had to whip over to the Dollar Store to pick up some packing tape for Hubs. On the way out I spotted a sign for a garage sale, so of course I had to go check it out.

That's where I found this!!

I thought it was pretty funky looking and I loved the patina.
Last weekend I visited a sale way, way out in the boonies...so far in the boonies that I actually started to wonder if it was some sort of a lure for women (I have a very brilliant imagination). It wasn't.
But what was there was a GORGEOUS ancient trunk...for ten dollars. Honestly I thought my eyes were fooling me. And then, right under my nose someone picked it up and bought it!! Okay, maybe not right under, but almost. I could have cried. I even briefly considered tackling her and suggesting we fight over it.
But my rather reserved Swedish heritage got in the way and I watched her walk away with it. *tears*
Well, that made me all the more determined today that I wasn't.letting.this.one.get.away.

But now my question is...what the heck is it?
Even the lady I bought it from doesn't have a clue. Apparently it belonged to her father
when he was in the Navy.

Does anyone have any ideas?

It says "Tecumseh" on the top. I googled it and apparently that's near Windsor, Ontario.
If any of you have any clues as to what it might be...please do let me know! I'm pretty curious.

I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to do with it yet.
My first thought was using it as a planter outside, but the more I look at it, the more I think it
would make a pretty interesting little side table next to a very sleek leather sofa!
I go kinda ga-ga over the look of really old things paired next to ultra modern!!!

  1. I love it! I think it would be great if you sealed it and then used it in the bathroom to hold extra rolls of toilet paper. How cool. It would be a great planter too. Love the name of your blog (that's one of my favorite movies).

  3. My first impression was that it was a bait bucket, but to me Tecumseh means engine parts.
You could use it as a picnic champagne bucket...

You should link it up to Junker Newbie's meme "Would you buy this Wednesday" and get ideas on what to do with it.

  8. I don't know what it was for, but you can't fake patina like that--nice find!

  9. Hi Evie, I saw your comment on someone's blog and had to come check out your blog since my daughter's name is Evie. I am a new follower. I love your header and I googled Tecumseh too and found engine parts or such and I guess that held some sort of parts or repair or maintenance equipment. Being that my family is from Oklahoma, there is also a Tecumseh there, and Tecumseh Indians, but I don't think that that is related to them. Can't wait to see what you will be posting about next. Please come visit me, and I would love for you to add your blog to the blog directory on my blog. Blessings!!

  11. I can't be certain, but I am pretty sure that is a shipping container (note the rec'd stamp) for a Tecumseh Brand hermetically sealed compressor. It looks about the right shape and size for one of the old-school refrigerator compressors, probably a retrofit for an icebox.
